EYELIGHTS

EYELIGHTS are an exciting new product designed by an American chiropractor with an interest in sensory processing, motor control and cognitive function. Through his study of neurology he recognised that the visual system could be used to help improve performance in a range of areas including attention deficits, learning delays, lazy eyes, postural problems and sport performance.

The essence of the treatment relates to the tendency of the brain to develop a preference to use one side of the body more so than the other. Right or left handedness when writing is a good example of this.

Few people realise that this preference extends into almost all aspects of the body's performance. The difference between awareness and control of the two sides of the body can be so marked at times that it puts the body out of balance resulting in a variety of difficulties. EYELIGHTS have been designed to help restore this balance.

Fatigue and stress accentuate imbalance as the body shifts its resources into the side that functions most effectively. Restoring the awareness of the non dominant side will therefore enhance performance as the body is able to deal more effectively with the information it is receiving.

Children with learning problems show delayed development in many areas. Issues such as poor motor coordination, reversals, losing place and skipping words when reading can all be directly related to poor body knowledge and awareness. EYELIGHTS can help these children.

The EYELIGHTS achieve this by intermittent flashing of LED's (Light Emitting Diodes) before the non dominant eye. Each time the lights flash, the centres of the brain dealing with the non dominant side are aroused. The brain cannot ignore the changes occurring in the vision of the non dominant eye as these may indicate danger (a survival reflex). Thus awareness of the non dominant side of the body is increased . Repeated stimulation over weeks and months will increase the resting level of awareness of the non dominant side of the body, with the ultimate goal being equal awareness or balance. After a period of therapy, the lens colour may need to be changed to further assist development.

EYELIGHTS are available from Thompson, Larter, Lee & Associates for sale and hire.

We also offer Vision Therapy programs which incorporate EYELIGHTS.
