Field Test

As people get older they usually maintain their ability to see clearly in good light situations.

However, a large proportion of older folk find that it becomes harder to see in low light conditions.

They also can have more difficulty recovering from glare (as in oncoming headlights at night).

When attention is divided (eg driving and being spoken to) studies have shown that awareness of what's happening in the side vision can be severely restricted in the older person. That is, the Useful Field of Vision becomes restricted.

If these issues are relevant to you, contrast sensitivity and glare recovery tests can be done as well as standard eye chart readings.

Remember: the simplest thing to do to enhance your driving vision is to ensure your windscreen is clean, inside and out! Then have your eyes examined thoroughly to ensure your vision is at its optimum.
